Shelly Manne, born in New York on June 11, 1920 was an influential jazz drummer, composer, recording artist, educator, and bandleader. In the 1940s he performed with Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, George Shearing, and Charlie Ventura among others. He moved to Los Angeles around 1950 and became important in the "West Coast jazz" movement. He started his own group in 1955.
